Treatment and Diagnosis of OCD

Going to a therapist who is trained in the assessment and treatment of OCD is the first step. An OCD assessment usually includes an interview and the completion of OCD surveys. From there you would discuss the results and what the recommended treatments would be.

The standard psychological treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). This is a research-based intervention that allows us to change our relationship with anxiety and engage in the life we would like to be living. ERP is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy that targets our underlying fear by introducing us slowly and gradually to the things that trigger our anxiety. You and I will work collaboratively to determine the pace of treatment. Click here to learn more about ERP: https://iocdf.org/about-ocd/treatment/erp/

While ERP is the gold standard in treating OCD, other evidence based tools can also be incorporated into ERP such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Mindfulness
  • The discussion of medications, nutrition and lifestyle choices are also a part of treatment.

Dr. Mazza is certified in Exposure and Response Prevention through The Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety at the University of Pennsylvania and through The Behavioral Therapy Institute. She also has training in cognitive therapy, mindfulness and acceptance and commitment therapy. The majority of her practice is working with adults who are struggling with OCD or other types of anxiety disorders.

Here’s how I can possibly help: By meeting with me, we can determine what is leading to the problem and I can share what tools are out there that have helped others with similar problems. Together we can learn effective strategies and as barriers come up in your life you will have a set of tools to utilize. This is meant to be a short-term collaborative learning process that gets you closer to who you want to be and doing the things that are important to you.
